Concentration

Hi, this is another portrait of Aurelio that I have painted. This time from a photo instead of from life. I've been reading a book on Rembrandt and looking at his portraits. I wanted to capture some of the light and dark that Rembrandt used but it didn't work to well on this picture. I need more dramatic lighting in real life to be able to try and attemt this. Over all I a am pleased with this picture. There might need a bit of improvement on the hands yet. What do you think?

Hi Kay, I am amazed at the amount of colour you are able to inject into your pastel work.
Rich in colour and dimension.
This is a masterful and sensitive portrait!
Brava!

Hi Peruguina, thankyou for dropping by. I haven't seen you around in bloggy land for a long time. Thanks for the positive encouragement.

Hi Wendi, you are always good for an honest critique. Thanks, always very helpful. That right arm I had completely lost and he lost some of his masculinity, so maybe I have put too much back in.

Hi Kay, this is beautiful, I like how he kind of 'appears' out of the colour

Great color and energy. I like the way you have handled the background, I can feel your strokes. Hands are soooo tough to do, left hand came out great and maybe a lost edge on the right. But I would leave it alone. Well done!!

Beautiful colors in this piece and you portray a very concentrating mood in the figure. When I look at the picture the hands look right, so I would say that they don't need more work.
Rembrandt's portraits always have a very dark value somewhere in the picture. I am trying to maintain 3 values in my pictures but sometimes the darks get washed out. Its really difficult to do. Some people paint on a black background (Karin Jurik) and that seems to work.

Thanks Catherine for the encouragement. I agree, that it is missing the darkness of Rembrandts paintings.
